Months after graduating from Brown University with bachelor’s degrees in Africana Studies and Modern Culture and Media, I joined NBC News as a News Associate in August 2020. I was a part of the initial News Now PM team that covered Supreme Court Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation, the 2020 presidential election, extreme weather in the West and the death of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I also was a part of the .com team that liveblogged the second impeachment trial of President Donald Trump and the January 6th Capital Riot.
Skills Learned:
Breaking news writing and video editing
Editorial planning
I was promoted to an Editorial Assistant over on the TODAY.com side July 2021. I regularly reported and wrote equity-oriented articles for NBC BLK, including:
- Tulsa Race Massacre, 100 Years later: Why it happened and why it’s still relevant today
- Black New Yorkers strike back at city program that seized their properties for developers
- Inside one woman’s effort to normalize marijuana in homes and get equity ‘baked into the laws’
- Undergraduates at Brown vote for university to offer reparations
I also wrote entertainment and lifestyle pieces for TODAY.com. Landing separate interviews with actors Billy Porter, Quinta Brunson and Javicia Leslie led to my managers promoting me to an Associate Trending Reporter in 2022. Celebrity interviews rolled in from there, including Usher, Chaka Khan, Angela Bassett and Morris Chestnut. I worked red carpets for movie premieres and awards shows, where I set a personal record of interviewing 15 people in one hour.
